Summary

The PhotoPainter is an e-paper photo frame based on the ESP32-S3 with a 7.3-inch E6 full-color display (800×480). It offers three operating modes: local image display via TF card, LAN server mode for Wi-Fi image transfer, and AI conversation mode with voice control.

Technical overview

  • Display size: 160.0 mm × 96.0 mm; enclosure dimensions: 154.0 mm × 214.0 mm × 32.0 mm
  • Resolution: 800 × 480 pixels at a pixel pitch of 0.2 mm × 0.2 mm
  • Color output: Black, White, Green, Blue, Red, Yellow; grayscale levels: 2
  • Refresh time approx. 25 s; standby current ≤ 1 mA; operating voltage 5 V
  • Buttons: PWR to power on/off and sleep; BOOT to switch images and enter download mode; KEY to wake up and switch modes
  • Mode 1: display images from the 06_user_Foundation_img directory on the TF card; only 24-bit BMP in 800×480 or 480×800, dithered
  • Mode 2: device provides a Wi-Fi hotspot “esp_network” (password 1234567890) to send images via web interface
  • Mode 3: AI conversation with wake word “Hello, XiaoZhi”, automatic weather display and MCP services for images in the 05_user_ai_img directory
  • Images must be dithered before display; Waveshare provides an open conversion tool for this purpose
  • Firmware is flashed via a web flashing tool; set the start address to 0x0

Notes and version constraints

  • The refresh time of 25 s is based on test data; actual results may vary
  • A flickering effect occurs during global refresh – this is normal
  • The text-to-image test model will be discontinued; users must configure their own model
  • No technical support is provided for the open conversion tool
  • Before swapping the TF card, shut down via PWR (hold 5 s) and disconnect USB
  • Download mode: hold PWR for 5 s, then press BOOT and click PWR
  • The specified firmware start address 0x0 is a fixed setting; changes require manual adjustment
