Technical overview
- Resolution: 720 × 720 pixels on a round 4-inch IPS panel.
- Connection: A 15-pin FPC cable links the display to the Raspberry Pi's DSI interface; 5 V power and I²C are connected via a 4-pin header.
- Compatibility: Supports Raspberry Pi 5/CM4/CM3+/CM3 as well as Pi 4B/3B+/3B/3A+.
- Operating systems: Works with Trixie, Bookworm, Bullseye, and Buster.
- Trixie/Bookworm configuration: Add dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-waveshare-panel,4_0_inchC under [all] in config.txt; the DSI1 interface is used by default.
- Manual driver installation for Bullseye/Buster: Clone the Waveshare-DSI-LCD repository from GitHub, select the correct kernel and architecture subdirectory, then run sudo bash ./WS_xinchDSI_MAIN.sh 40C I2C0.
- Backlight adjustment: Via the GUI (Control Center → Screens → DSI-2 → Brightness) or through the terminal command echo X | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness, where X ranges from 0 (darkest) to 255 (brightest).
- Screen rotation: In Trixie/Bookworm via Control Center → Screen → Orientation; in older systems via corresponding config.txt entries.
- Disable touch: Add disable_touchscreen=1 to the end of config.txt and reboot the device.
- Always confirm the exact model before configuring; incorrect settings can cause black screens or missing displays.

Notes and version constraints
- Always confirm the exact product model before configuration; this guide applies only to the 4inch DSI LCD (C), not other 4-inch DSI models such as 4-DSI-TOUCH-C.
- The manual driver installation steps require a stable internet connection.
- If you change the motherboard (e.g., from Pi 4 to Pi 3), the driver must be reinstalled because different driver files need to be loaded.
- Backlight and rotation steps are version-sensitive; the exact menu paths differ depending on the operating system (Trixie vs. Bookworm vs. older versions).
- The wlr-randr and xset dpms commands apply only to specific graphical interfaces (Wayland or X11 respectively); verify your environment before using them.
