Summary

Overview: The 3.4-inch DSI round touch display WSAL24321 uses an IPS panel with 800×800 resolution and 10-point capacitive touch. It is driven directly via the DSI interface on Raspberry Pi (up to 60 Hz), supports Bookworm/Bullseye/Buster systems, and offers software-controlled backlight brightness.

Technical overview

  • IPS panel with fixed 800 × 800 pixel resolution and optical bonding for sharper image quality
  • 10-point capacitive touch with toughened glass (hardness up to 6H)
  • Direct operation via the DSI interface of the Raspberry Pi at a maximum refresh rate of 60 Hz
  • Supported OS images: Trixie, Bookworm, Bullseye, and Buster on compatible Pi models
  • Hardware connection: DSI-Cable-12cm connects the display to the 22-PIN DSI1 port; the Pi is mounted back-side down onto the display board
  • Additional power supply via the 4-PIN header or Type-C is required because the DSI cable alone does not provide sufficient power
  • By default the DIP switch is set to I2C-0; communication occurs over the I2C channel within the DSI cable
  • For Trixie/Bookworm: add dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d and dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-waveshare-panel,3_4_inch to config.txt (DSI1 recommended)
  • Buster/Bullseye manual driver install: git clone Waveshare-DSI-LCD, then run sudo bash ./WS_xinchDSI_MAIN.sh 34C I2C0 and reboot
  • Backlight via terminal: echo X | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness (X = 0–255)

Commands and examples – verify before use:

git clone https://github.com/waveshare/Waveshare-DSI-LCD
sudo bash ./WS_xinchDSI_MAIN.sh 34C I2C0
sudo reboot
echo 100 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-waveshare-panel,3_4_inch
dtoverlay=WS_xinchDSI_Screen,SCREEN_type=9,I2C_bus=10
dtoverlay=WS_xinchDSI_Touch,I2C_bus=10
disable_touchscreen=1

Notes and version constraints

  • Verify the exact model before configuration – incorrect settings can cause a black screen or no image
  • These instructions apply only to the 3.4inch DSI LCD (C); they are not applicable to other 3.4inch DSI models such as 3.4-DSI-TOUCH-C
  • When changing the Pi motherboard, drivers must be reinstalled because Pi4 and Pi3 require different driver files
  • After system updates on Buster, previously installed driver files may be overwritten; reinstallation is required
  • If switching to I2C-1, the DIP switch must be toggled and the Pi's 40-PIN I2C port connected via the pin header
  • Commands added to config.txt require a reboot to take effect
