Summary

The Waveshare WSAL23996 is an industrial-grade isolated USB-to-serial converter based on the FT232RNL chip. It supports conversion from USB to RS232, RS485, RS422 and TTL, with integrated power and signal isolation, TVS protection and a self-recovering fuse.

Technical overview

  • Chip used: original FT232RNL for fast, stable and reliable communication
  • Supported conversions: USB to RS232, RS485, RS422 and TTL; no inter-conversion between the serial standards
  • RS232: DB9 connector, point-to-point, baud rate 300 bps to 921600 bps, TVS diode for surge and ESD protection
  • RS485/RS422: screw terminals, hardware-based automatic direction control, baud rate 300 bps to 2 Mbps
  • RS485 supports up to 32 nodes (repeater recommended above 16); RS422 up to 256 nodes
  • Integrated 120-ohm matching resistors for RS485/RS422, enabled by default; can be disabled via jumper
  • TTL: screw terminals with TXD, RXD, GND, 3.3 V/5 V; voltage translator switchable to 3.3 V or 5 V
  • Protection circuitry: 200 mA self-recovering fuse, TVS rectifier diodes, lightning and ESD protection (up to 15 kV for RS485/422)
  • Aluminum-alloy case, suitable for wall-mount and DIN-rail mount
  • Operating temperature -15 °C to 70 °C, humidity 5 % to 95 % RH
  • Indicator LEDs: PWR (red) indicates USB power; TXD lights when transmitting, RXD when receiving

Notes and version constraints

  • Exact driver file names and download links are not fully specified in the source; consult the current FTDI driver page
  • The exact location of the jumper to disable the 120-ohm resistors requires opening the case; without a photo, the precise spot cannot be unambiguously described
  • Maximum power consumption is not stated in the source
  • For long distances over RS485/RS422, a repeater is recommended; the exact count depends on cable type and environment
