Technical overview

  • The board supports PoE power supply (802.3af) and a DC input of 7 to 36 V.
  • Four USB 2.0 ports are present; the USB interface is disabled by default and enabled via dtoverlay=dwc2,dr_mode=host.
  • The BOOT switch controls CM4 startup mode: ON enters programming mode, OFF starts the system normally.
  • Two HDMI outputs allow connection of external displays.
  • An I²C bus (I2C-10) carries an RTC chip PCF85063A (address 0x51) and a fan controller EMC2301 (address 0x2f).
  • When operating an external fan, the voltage (5 V or 12 V) must be verified before connecting; the FAN_VCC jumper sets the default voltage.
  • The device provides integrated battery monitoring via the INA219 chip on I²C bus 10, address 0x43.
  • On first battery connection, no power output may occur until the BOOT button is pressed or the battery is charged to activate the protection chip.

Notes and version constraints

  • The fan must be connected before powering on the expansion board; connecting it after power-on can damage the control chip.
  • If the battery polarity is reversed, the WARNING LED lights up; do not charge in this state.
  • Sustained currents above 4 A can cause overheating; ensure adequate cooling.
  • Plugging or unplugging devices other than USB and HDMI while powered on is prohibited.
  • If the battery's positive insulating pad is damaged, discontinue use; when removing the battery, do not pry the positive terminal with a screwdriver.
  • Lithium batteries have a limited cycle life; replace them at end of rated life or after two years.
  • Under heavy load with low battery voltage the system may restart repeatedly; the demo code includes automatic shutdown after about 60 s if charging is unavailable.
