Technical overview
- Based on the RP2040 microcontroller chip designed by Raspberry Pi, featuring a dual-core Arm Cortex M0+ processor with a flexible clock running up to 133 MHz.
- Built-in 264 KB SRAM and onboard Flash memory available in 4 MB or 16 MB variants.
- The castellated module form factor allows direct soldering onto carrier boards.
- Supports USB 1.1 hosts and slave devices; drag-and-drop programming via USB mass storage is possible.
- Includes multiple hardware peripherals: 2× SPI, 2× I2C, 2× UART, 3× 12-bit ADCs, 16 PWM channels, an on-chip temperature sensor, and 8× PIO state machines for custom peripheral support.
- Compatible with most Raspberry Pi Pico modules while adding or enhancing features.
Commands and examples – verify before use:
set(PICO_BOARD pico CACHE STRING "Board type")
Notes and version constraints
- The path settings mentioned in the wiki (CMake, Git, Ninja, Python) refer to a Windows environment and are version-sensitive; paths must be adapted to the local system before use.
- Flashing MicroPython firmware on RP2040 boards may differ from the Pico: press and hold both BOOT and RESET buttons, release RESET first then BOOT so that a removable disk appears.
- The official MicroPython firmware was originally limited to 2 MB of memory; the corresponding 4M or 16M firmware must be used for those variants.
- The VSCode extension requires at least VS Code v1.87.0; older installations need updating.
- When doing C/C++ development, the CMake file must not contain Chinese characters, otherwise project import may fail.
