Summary

The Waveshare Pico-ESP8266 is a WiFi expansion module for the Raspberry Pi Pico family. It is controlled over UART using AT commands and supports TCP/UDP communication through an embedded LWIP protocol stack. The module provides three WiFi operating modes (STA, AP, STA+AP), a PCB antenna in the 2.4 GHz band, and two function buttons for updating the AT firmware.

Technical overview

  • Interface: UART at 115200 bps baud rate
  • WiFi standard: IEEE 802.11b/g/n in the 2400–2483.5 MHz frequency range
  • Three WiFi operating modes: station (STA), access point (AP), and combined (STA+AP)
  • Operating voltage: 3.3 V; operating temperature: -40 °C to 85 °C
  • Module dimensions: 58 × 25 mm
  • Two function buttons allow flashing new AT firmware via the Pico
  • Suitable for IoT projects where the Pico needs a WiFi connection

Notes and version constraints

  • The IP addresses shown (e.g., 192.168.3.116, 192.168.3.133, 192.168.4.1) are example values from the source document and must be replaced with your own network values.
  • Exiting transparent mode by sending “+++” requires the three characters to be sent consecutively without spaces or line breaks; manual typing may be too slow, so use a serial port tool instead.
  • When enabling multiple connections (AT+CIPMUX=1), the message “IPMODE must be 0” can appear; the ESP8266 must then be disconnected/restarted and the command re-entered.
  • The firmware version shown (AT version 1.2.0.0 / SDK 1.5.4.1) reflects an older snapshot; current versions may differ.
  • Flashing steps via the Pico assume the dev_cdc_ports.uf2 file is available; the exact file and path depend on the development environment used.
