Technical overview

  • Resolution: 800 × 480 pixels; colors: black/white (2 grey levels)
  • Interface: SPI (CPHL=0, CPOL=0, i.e. SPI mode 0); CS active-low, DC selects command/data
  • Operating voltage: 3.3 V; standby current < 0.01 µA; refresh power ~26.4 mW (typ.)
  • Full refresh takes ~5 s; a normal flicker occurs during full refresh
  • Dimensions: raw panel 170.2 × 111.2 × 1.18 mm; driver board 65 × 31 mm; display area 163.2 × 97.92 mm; dot pitch 0.205 × 0.204 mm
  • Pico pinout: DIN→GP11 (MOSI), CLK→GP10 (SCK), CS→GP9, DC→GP8, RST→GP12, BUSY→GP13, VCC→VSYS, GND→GND
  • Two user buttons plus one reset button on the board for simple interaction
  • Pixel encoding: 1 bit per pixel (black = 0, white = 1), so 8 pixels per byte
  • Development code is in the Pico_ePaper_Code repository (C and MicroPython examples); the C project is built with CMake + Pico-SDK and flashed as a .uf2 file
  • E-paper uses MED technology (microencapsulated electrophoresis) without a backlight; it reflects ambient light, viewing angle 180°

Commands and examples – verify before use:

cd ~ && sudo wget https://files.waveshare.com/upload/5/5a/Pico_ePaper_Code.zip && unzip Pico_ePaper_Code.zip -d Pico_ePaper_Code && cd ~/Pico_ePaper_Code
git clone https://github.com/waveshare/Pico_ePaper_Code.git && cd ~/Pico_ePaper_Code
cd ~/Pico_ePaper_Code/c && mkdir build && cd build && export PICO_SDK_PATH=../../pico-sdk && cmake -DPICO_BOARD=pico -DPICO_PLATFORM=rp2040 .. && make -j9
cp epd.uf2 /media/pi/RPI-RP2/
sudo apt upgrade thonny

Notes and version constraints

  • Refresh time and power figures are test measurements; expect deviations depending on driver board and usage conditions
  • Brief flicker during a full refresh is normal
  • After deep sleep the display must be re-initialized in software; on first wake-up clear the screen first to avoid afterimages
  • If the program hangs in 'busy': check wiring and verify SPI settings (baud rate, mode)
  • The definition line in main.c must be adjusted for the specific e-paper type – select the 7.5-inch variant
  • No warranty, certification or pricing information appears in the source; do not add such values
