Documentation notice: This technical documentation was independently rewritten from an archived supplier source. Check technical details and commands against the product version and manufacturer documentation before use.

Summary

The Waveshare 11.9-inch display is a universal HDMI screen with an IPS panel, a 320×1480 hardware resolution, and a 5-point capacitive touch panel behind toughened glass rated up to 6H. It can be used as a monitor on PCs running Windows 7 through 11 or as a display for Raspberry Pi systems (Raspberry Pi OS, Ubuntu, Kali, Retropie). Connection uses HDMI for video and USB for touch input; audio can additionally be output via a 3.5 mm jack.

Technical overview

  • IPS panel with fixed hardware resolution of 320 × 1480 pixels
  • 5-point capacitive touch panel behind toughened glass cover rated up to 6H
  • PC use: connect the TOUCH port to USB and HDMI to the PC; with multiple monitors, touch defaults to the main display
  • Raspberry Pi use: flash the system image, then append max_framebuffer_height=1480, hdmi_group=2, hdmi_mode=87 and hdmi_timings=320 0 80 16 32 1480 0 16 4 12 0 0 0 60 0 42000000 3 to config.txt
  • EDID timing parameters: pixel clock 48.00 MHz, H/V addressable 320/1480, blanking 200/76, front porch 100/10, sync width 10/60, image size 320×1480
  • Screen orientation: Bookworm allows synchronized screen and touch rotation via “Screen Configuration”; older versions require separate settings
  • Rotation without desktop environment: set parameters such as video=HDMI-A-1:400x1280M@60,rotate=90 in cmdline.txt (path varies by system: /boot/cmdline.txt or /boot/firmware/cmdline.txt)
  • Routing touch to a secondary display: xinput map-to-output <touch-ID> <HDMI-ID>, e.g. xinput map-to-output 7 HDMI-1
  • Long-press right-click gesture: run evdev-rce with LONG_CLICK_INTERVAL=1000 and LONG_CLICK_FUZZ=200, and activate it persistently via an autostart entry
  • Audio output available via the 3.5 mm HP jack; a flashing green light on the back indicates power-on state without an HDMI signal

Notes and version constraints

  • The exact path structure of cmdline.txt varies between /boot/cmdline.txt and /boot/firmware/cmdline.txt depending on the OS version; verify the actual layout before editing.
  • With multiple connected displays, touch input only affects the main screen by default; explicit assignment requires running xinput map-to-output after every boot unless permanently anchored in an autostart file.
  • HDMI rotation settings apply jointly with other interfaces (DPI, DSI) and cannot be configured independently.
  • The behavior of the evdev-rce right-click trick depends on the system; whether it works identically across all supported distributions must be tested per environment.
  • Sleep-mode behavior (about 10 minutes of inactivity) refers to the official Raspberry Pi OS; other distributions may differ.
  • The source text contains placeholders and incomplete sections in several steps; individual instructions must be manually verified before implementation.
