Technical overview
- Resolution: 296 × 128 pixels; screen diagonal approx. 2.9 inches.
- Active area: 66.89 mm × 29.05 mm; raw panel outline 79.0 mm × 36.7 mm × 1.05 mm; with driver board 82.0 mm × 38.0 mm.
- Interface: SPI mode CPHL=0, CPOL=0 (SPI0); CS active-low, DC selects command/data.
- Operating voltage: 3.3 V / 5 V; standby current below 0.01 µA; refresh power typically 26.4 mW.
- Refresh times: partial about 0.6 s; full about 3 s; flickering during global refresh is a normal phenomenon.
- Pixel rendering: monochrome: 0 = black, 1 = white; one byte stores eight pixels.
- Four grayscale levels: black 00b, dark grey 10b, light grey 01b, white 11b; two bits per pixel.
- Two frame-buffer registers (0x24 and 0x26) are combined to produce the four grayscale values.
- Hardware wiring to Pico/Pico 2 via 8-pin cable: VCC→VSYS, GND→GND, DIN→GP11, CLK→GP10, CS→GP9, DC→GP8, RST→GP12, BUSY→GP13.
- Demo code is available as a ZIP or Git repository; the C project is built with CMake and make, producing epd.uf2.
Commands and examples – verify before use:
cd ~
sudo wget https://files.waveshare.com/upload/5/5a/Pico_ePaper_Code.zip
unzip Pico_ePaper_Code.zip -d Pico_ePaper_Code
cd ~/Pico_ePaper_Code
git clone https://github.com/waveshare/Pico_ePaper_Code.git
mkdir build
export PICO_SDK_PATH=../../pico-sdk
cmake -DPICO_BOARD=pico -DPICO_PLATFORM=rp2040 ..
make -j9
cp epd.uf2 /media/pi/RPI-RP2/
Notes and version constraints
- The stated refresh times and power figures are experimental measurements; real-world deviations are possible.
- Flickering occurs during global refresh – this is a normal phenomenon, not a fault.
- After waking from deep sleep, the display must be re-initialized and cleared first to avoid afterimages.
- Four-grayscale display is only supported by full refresh; partial refresh does not show four-gray-scale output.
- The exact line in main.c that must be uncommented depends on the specific display type; verify before compiling.
- The demo code instructions reference external links (Raspberry Pi docs, Waveshare files) whose availability is not guaranteed.
