Summary

The Waveshare Pico ePaper 2.13 is a 2.13-inch e-ink display module (250 × 122 pixels, black/white) with an SPI interface for the Raspberry Pi Pico. It runs at 3.3 V, has a partial refresh time of about 0.3 s and a full refresh time of about 2 s.

Technical overview

  • Resolution: 250 × 122 pixels; dot pitch 0.194 × 0.194 mm; active area 48.55 × 23.71 mm.
  • Operating voltage: 3.3 V; standby current < 0.01 µA; refresh power typical 26.4 mW.
  • Interface: SPI mode CPHL=0, CPOL=0 (SPI0); signals: CS, DC, SCLK, SDIN, RST, BUSY.
  • Pico pin mapping: DIN→GP11 (MOSI), CLK→GP10 (SCK), CS→GP9, DC→GP8, RST→GP12, BUSY→GP13, VCC→VSYS, GND→GND.
  • Pixel definition: 1 bit per pixel (1 = white, 0 = black); 1 byte encodes 8 pixels; data stored MSB-first.
  • Full refresh takes about 2 s and produces brief flicker – this is normal.
  • Partial refresh takes about 0.3 s; after several partial refreshes, perform one full refresh or the display may become permanently faulty.
  • Do not leave the screen under continuous high voltage: use sleep mode or power off when idle.
  • The FPC cable is fragile: bend only horizontally, not vertically; protect the panel from impacts.
  • Demo codes are available via wget or git clone; the C project is compiled with CMake and flashed as epd.uf2.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo wget https://files.waveshare.com/upload/5/5a/Pico_ePaper_Code.zip
unzip Pico_ePaper_Code.zip -d Pico_ePaper_Code
git clone https://github.com/waveshare/Pico_ePaper_Code.git
cmake -DPICO_BOARD=pico -DPICO_PLATFORM=rp2040 ..
make -j9

Notes and version constraints

  • Stated refresh times and power figures are measured values; actual results may vary.
  • After sleep mode, the driver must be re-initialized before sending new image data.
  • If the displayed image looks wrong, verify the configured image width and height.
  • Older driver boards support 3.3 V only; newer versions (V2.1+) include level conversion for 3.3 V and 5 V – confirm board version before use.
  • For long-term storage: clear the screen via software and store it face-up.
  • If the program hangs on 'busy': check wiring and SPI parameters (clock rate, mode).
