Documentation notice: This technical documentation was independently rewritten from an archived supplier source. Check technical details and commands against the product version and manufacturer documentation before use.

Summary

This is a 4-channel measurement module that reads per-channel current, voltage and power via I2C/SMBus. It uses an onboard 0.1-ohm shunt resistor and a 12-bit ADC.

Technical overview

  • Uses the standard Raspberry Pi 40-pin GPIO expansion header and fits all Pi boards.
  • Four measurement channels, each with INx+ (input) and INx- (output); bidirectional current flow is possible.
  • Current range ±3.2 A; resolution 0.8 mA in the large range or 0.1 mA in the small range (±400 mA).
  • Voltage range 0–26 V; operating voltage 3.3 V or 5 V.
  • Additional multiply register calculates power directly from current and voltage data.
  • Housing dimensions 65 × 30 mm, hole diameter 3.0 mm.
  • Connection to the Raspberry Pi is via the GPIO header or by wires to the I2C bus.
  • Example files are available for Raspberry Pi (Python), STM32 (Keil) and Arduino.
  • When using different power adapters, GND must be connected, otherwise the VBus voltage will not be measured.
  • The module type is based on the INA219 chip and is designed exclusively for DC.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo raspi-config
sudo reboot
sudo apt-get install p7zip
wget https://files.waveshare.com/upload/6/69/Current-Power_Monitor_HAT_Code.7z
7zr x Current-Power_Monitor_HAT_Code.7z -r -o./Current-Power_Monitor_HAT
cd Current-Power_Monitor_HAT/RaspberryPi
python3 ina219.py

Notes and version constraints

  • The source contains unresolved placeholders ({{{name2}}} through {{{name6}}}, {{{userDefinedInfo}}}, {{{userdefinedvalue}}}, {{{3}}}, {{{4}}}, {{{5}}); these values must be verified before use.
  • On Bullseye-based systems, “apt-get” must be replaced with “apt”; only Python 3 is supported.
  • The module’s I2C address cannot be changed; therefore multiple modules cannot simply be stacked.
  • The device is not suitable for AC current (DC only).
  • The exact operation of the multiply registers and the specific register addresses are not fully documented in the source; manual verification is required.
