Technical overview

  • The module is built around the SX1262 or SX1268 chip set and communicates over a UART interface. It supports ISM frequency bands at 433, 470, 868 and 915 MHz.
  • Transmit power is selectable (e.g., 10, 13, 17 or 22 dBm), and the packet length can be chosen among 32, 64, 128 and 240 bytes.
  • Jumpers M0/M1 select the operating mode: short/short = transmit mode; short/open = configuration mode; open/short = wake-on-radio mode; open/open = deep-sleep mode.
  • Signal quality can be evaluated via the RSSI value; an LBT feature is also available, measuring channel noise before transmission to improve success rates in harsh environments.
  • Under ideal conditions, the module reaches up to 5 km range with clear line-of-sight, low air speed and a suitable antenna.
  • Power consumption is approximately 100 mA in transmit, 11 mA in receive, and 2 µA in deep sleep.
  • Logic voltage is 3.3 V, supply voltage is 5 V; the operating temperature range is -40 to +85 °C.
  • For PC connection, a CP2102 driver is required over USB; the default test baud rate is 9600.
  • To communicate with a Raspberry Pi, the serial port must be enabled and the appropriate Python library installed; demos run via a script with a configurable COM/serial port.
  • The module uses a private protocol and does not support LoRaWAN.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

# Enable the Raspberry Pi serial port (older systems)
sudo raspi-config
ls -l /dev/serial*

Notes and version constraints

  • The exact commands for enabling the serial port depend on the Raspberry Pi system version; from 2021.10.30 onward, certain package installations are no longer needed.
  • Demo scripts assume a specific COM port; if communication fails, verify the actual available port using 'ls -l /dev/serial*'.
  • Compatibility with other LoRa modules from different manufacturers or series is not supported – only identical modules of the same type can communicate with each other.
  • Switching between stream and packet modes affects reliability versus real-time behavior; the choice should match the application requirements.
  • All range figures apply only under ideal conditions (open area, clear line-of-sight, suitable antenna); real-world distances will be considerably shorter.
