Summary
The Waveshare E-Paper ESP8266 driver board is a compact expansion board that communicates with various Waveshare e-paper raw panels via the SPI bus protocol. It integrates an ESP8266 WiFi microcontroller and enables wireless content updates through an HTML frontend or local offline demos.

Technical overview
- Supported models: The board supports a range of Waveshare e-paper raw panels from 1.54 to 13.3 inches. A corresponding demo exists for each model (e.g., epd1in54_V2-demo, epd13in13b-demo).
- Interfaces: VCC (3.3 V), GND, DIN (GPIO13/D7, MOSI), SCK (GPIO14/D5, CLK), CS (GPIO15/D8), DC (GPIO4/D2), RST (GPIO2/D4) and BUSY (GPIO5/D1). This mapping is hardwired on the board and requires no user configuration.
- Operating parameters: 5 V supply, operating current 50–100 mA, outline dimensions 29.57 mm × 48.26 mm, hole diameter 2.9 mm.
- WiFi standard: 802.11b/g/n; supports only the 2.4 GHz band.
- Bus interfaces: Default 4-wire SPI; 3-wire SPI also available.
- Development environment: Arduino IDE support for ESP8266; examples are provided under “examples” (offline) and “Loader_esp32wf” (WiFi/HTML).
- Image processing: Supports two algorithms – the Level method (for images with few colors) and Floyd-Steinberg dithering (for gradients and many color tones).
- Supported image file formats: BMP, JPEG, GIF, PNG, etc.
Notes and version constraints
- Version sensitivity: Demos reference the latest panel version. For older panels, check the version label on the back of the screen.
- Network segment: If the HTML frontend is unreachable, ensure the IP network segment in srvr.h matches the actual WiFi network and that there is no IP conflict.
- Older 1.54-inch and 2.13-inch panels without a V2 logo require changing a value in epd1in54.h or epd2in13.h to 1.
- ‘Picture cannot be refreshed’ error: Try using Google Chrome first; if it still fails, test with a different network.
- No web search was performed; all facts come solely from the supplied source and product metadata. Freshness limitation: source fetched on 30 Aug 2026; changes after that date are not reflected.
