Technical overview
- The panel is a 10.1-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1024 × 600 pixels.
- Screen output is provided via the HDMI input; the touch area additionally requires GPIO connections to the Raspberry Pi.
- The Raspberry Pi exposes 40 GPIO pins while the screen exposes 26 pins; pin mapping must be observed when connecting.
- Raspberry Pi Zero / Zero 2 W requires an additional HDMI cable because direct connection is not possible.
- In config.txt, add the lines hdmi_group=2, hdmi_mode=87, and hdmi_cvt 1024 600 60 6 0 0.
- To enable touch, use the overlay waveshare-ads7846, setting parameters such as penirq, xmin/xmax, ymin/ymax, speed, and swapxy.
- Copy the file waveshare-ads7846.dtbo into the /boot/overlays/ directory.
- Touch-area calibration is performed using evtest by adjusting the limits x_min, x_max, y_min, and y_max according to actual measured values.
- Depending on the operating system, several methods are available for rotating the screen: via Screen Configuration under Bookworm, via xrandr or display_rotate under Bullseye/Kali, and via cmdline.txt under Ubuntu.
- On Ubuntu, display rotation during command-line startup can be controlled through entries in /boot/firmware/cmdline.txt.
Commands and examples – verify before use:
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=87
hdmi_cvt 1024 600 60 6 0 0
dtoverlay=waveshare-ads7846,penirq=25,xmin=3900,xmax=200,ymin=200,ymax=3900,speed=50000,swapxy
sudo apt-get install evtest
sudo evtest
dtoverlay=waveshare-ads7846,x_min=164,x_max=4010,y_min=154,y_max=3758
xrandr -o 1
display_rotate=3
fbcon=rotate:0 video=HDMI-A-1:800x480M@60,rotate=0
Notes and version constraints
- The exact values for touch calibration are device-specific and must be determined individually using evtest.
- The method for screen rotation depends on the specific operating system and its version; the current environment should be checked before modifying configuration.
- Whether the KMS or FKMS driver is loaded affects which rotation commands are available; this must be verified before applying them.
- The referenced .deb packages are version-specific; ensure they are compatible with the installed system.
- Statements about power consumption (550 mA with backlight on, 100 mA with backlight off) and operating temperature (0°C to 70°C) come from the FAQ and should be confirmed before use in critical environments.
