Technical overview

  • The module is a 0.95-inch RGB OLED with an SPI interface and a straight/vertical pin header.
  • Operating voltage: 3.3 V or 5 V; driver chip is the SSD1331.
  • Resolution 96 × 64 pixels, RGB color depth of approximately 65K colors.
  • Module dimensions: 31.7 × 37 mm.
  • Operating temperature: −20 °C to +70 °C; storage temperature: −30 °C to +80 °C.
  • Viewing angle greater than 160°.
  • Pinout: VCC (3.3 V/5 V), GND, NC, DIN (SPI data), CLK (SPI clock), CS (chip select, active-low), D/C (low = command, high = data), RES (reset, active-low).
  • Only an SPI interface is present; although I²C is mentioned in the wiki, the module itself has SPI only.
  • For Raspberry Pi: enable SPI via raspi-config and reboot; on Bookworm only the lgpio library is usable.
  • Available C libraries: BCM2835, WiringPi, lgpio, plus a Python environment using spidev.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

cd bcm2835-1.71/
sudo ./configure && sudo make && sudo make check && sudo make install
sudo apt-get install wiringpi
wget https://project-downloads.drogon.net/wiringpi-latest.deb
sudo dpkg -i wiringpi-latest.deb
gpio -v
git clone https://github.com/WiringPi/WiringPi
cd WiringPi
./build
wget https://github.com/joan2937/lg/archive/master.zip
unzip master.zip
cd lg-master
sudo make install
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install python3-pip
sudo apt-get install python3-pil

Notes and version constraints

  • The source text contains unreliable template variables ({{{...}}); some sections are incomplete or polluted by navigation/marketing content.
  • The exact current draw of about 38 mA at full white and about 4 mA at full black applies to the 0.95-inch RGB OLED at 3.3 V; other sizes have their own values.
  • Displaying the same image for extended periods can cause afterimages and damage the OLED; periodic screen refresh recommended.
  • Avoid reverse polarity on the power supply.
  • Without program control the OLED will not light up because it has no backlight; software driving is required.
  • Version-sensitive steps: On Bookworm, BCM2835 and WiringPi do not work – only lgpio is usable.
  • On systems older than May 2019 the WiringPi upgrade step is omitted; from May 2019 onward a .deb update is required.
  • Before running demos, ensure SPI is not occupied by other devices (check /boot/config.txt).
  • Exact internal implementation details of the C libraries require inspecting DEV_Config.c/.h; switching between SPI/I²C must be done via macros there.
  • Any claims about compatibility, certifications, warranty, or price are absent from the source and must not be added.
