Summary

The Waveshare Laser Sensor (P/N 9524) is a digital obstacle-detection sensor based on the PT1301 chip. It uses modulated light at 650 nm and reports object presence via a digital output signal.

Technical overview

  • Boost chip: PT1301
  • Effective detection range: typically 0.01–0.8 m; maximum 1.5 m
  • Operating voltage: 2.5 V to 5.0 V
  • Dimensions: 53.0 mm × 18.0 mm; mounting holes 2.0 mm
  • Principle: A 180 kHz oscillator modulates the laser beam; the receiver accepts only same-frequency reflected light, reducing interference from ambient visible light
  • Applications: obstacle detection, pipeline counter, smart robot, obstacle-avoiding car
  • MCU wiring: VCC to 2.5–5.0 V supply, GND to ground, DOUT to a digital input of the MCU
  • Digital output: returns 0 or 1 rather than an analog value
  • Optical wavelength: 650 nm; the receiver detects modulated visible radiation in the 650–950 nm band
  • Operating current: approximately 40 mA at 3.3 V

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo apt-get install p7zip-full
cd ~
sudo wget https://files.waveshare.com/upload/f/fd/Laser-Sensor-code.7z
7z x Laser-Sensor-code.7z -o./Laser-Sensor-code
cd ~/Laser-Sensor-code/Pico/c/build
export PICO_SDK_PATH=../../pico-sdk
cmake ..
make -j9
cp main.uf2 /media/pi/RPI-RP2/

Notes and version constraints

  • Do not touch resistors or capacitors on the board while it is powered, to avoid burning out the infrared emitting tube.
  • Never point the laser directly at eyes – it can damage vision.
  • The STM32 examples are based on STM32F103RBT6 and STM32H743; other boards require custom wiring and code porting.
  • The Arduino example targets the Arduino UNO; other boards need modified connections.
  • Firmware selection for Pico is version-sensitive: prefer the supplied MicroPython firmware (rp2-pico-20210418-v1.15.uf2), as other firmwares may cause abnormal behavior.
  • For Pico C development, the Pico SDK path must be exported correctly; otherwise the build will fail.
  • All statements regarding compatibility, current draw, certifications, and warranty come solely from the source and should be confirmed by qualified personnel before release.
