Summary
The TCS3200 is a static RGB color sensor with four filters (red, green, blue, clear). The output is a square wave whose frequency is proportional to light intensity. The module includes four white LEDs for illumination.

Technical overview
- Sensor chip: TCS3200D, detects static colors
- Supply voltage: 2.7 V to 5.5 V
- Ideal measurement distance: approx. 10 mm
- Module dimensions: 36.0 mm x 20.6 mm; mounting hole diameter 2.0 mm
- Filter selection via S2/S3: LL=Red, LH=Blue, HL=Clear, HH=Green
- Frequency scaling via S0/S1: LL=Power down, LH=2%, HL=20%, HH=100%
- Typical output frequency range: 2 Hz to 500 kHz
- Applications: color sorting, ambient light sensing and calibration, test strip reading, color matching tests
Commands and examples – verify before use:
sudo apt-get install p7zip-full
sudo wget https://files.waveshare.com/upload/3/33/Color-Sensor-code.7z
7z x Color-Sensor-code.7z -o./Color-Sensor-code
cd ~/Color-Sensor-code/Pico/c/build/
cmake ..
make -j9
cp main.uf2 /media/pi/RPI-RP2/
Notes and version constraints
- The Pico examples assume the provided MicroPython firmware; with different firmware the code may run abnormally.
- STM32 examples are based on STM32F103RB; other boards require custom wiring and code adaptation.
- White balance adjustment must be repeated after every reset or change of the light source.
- External ambient light distorts measurements; for reliable results, test the module inside a closed, non-reflective box.
