Summary

The nRF52840 Eval Kit is a Bluetooth 5.0 development board with an onboard nRF52840 core module, Arduino and Raspberry Pi compatible GPIO headers, USB-UART via CP2102, and an SWD debug port. It supports bare-metal peripheral demos (GPIO, UART, SPI, I2C, NFC) and Bluetooth experiments including MESH.

Technical overview

  • Microcontroller: ARM Cortex-M4F @ 64 MHz, 1 MB flash, 256 kB RAM
  • Frequency band: 2.4 GHz; Bluetooth 5.0 with data rates up to 2 Mbps
  • Manufacturer-stated range: ~150 m open space, ~40 m indoor
  • On-board interfaces: UART, I2C, SPI, NFC antenna connector, TF card slot
  • Power: via USB or CR2032 battery (toggle switch)
  • On-board chips: CP2102 (USB-to-UART), RT9193-33 (level converter), buzzer, optical sensors
  • Indicators/controls: PWR LED, RXD/TXD LEDs, LED1–LED4, reset and user buttons
  • Dev environment: Keil MDK + Nordic DeviceFamilyPack, JLink driver (≥ V6.22 recommended), nRFx Command Line Tools for firmware flashing
  • SDK version referenced: SDK 15.2 (supports Bluetooth 5.0)
  • Available demos: GPIO LED, serial I/O, SPI loopback/OLED, I2C scan/BME280/MPU6050, NFC app launch, BLE slave/host/MESH

Commands and examples – verify before use:

nrfjprog -v

Notes and version constraints

  • Effective range depends heavily on environmental conditions; stated values are manufacturer claims without independent verification.
  • JLink driver version must be ≥ V6.22, otherwise the tool will not recognize the debugger.
  • Keil requires a license for projects exceeding 256 kB; without a license compilation is limited.
  • Bluetooth MESH demos additionally require installing SEGGER Embedded Studio for ARM 4.10a.
  • Some Bluetooth experiments use simulated data (e.g., heart rate, bicycle speed); real measurements require external sensors.
  • The exact pin assignment of jumpers/solder joints should be verified against the schematic before modification.
