Technical overview

  • Resolution 800×480 pixels, IPS panel with 50% NTSC color gamut, brightness about 300 cd/m², contrast 1000:1, refresh rate up to 60 Hz.
  • Connection is made through the Raspberry Pi DSI port using an FFC cable; the gold finger on the display-side connector must face upward.
  • Compatible with Pi 2B, B+, A+, 3B/3B+/3A+ and Pi 4B; some CM3/CM3+/CM4 boards additionally require a 15 cm DSI cable.
  • For system installation, use the official Raspberry Pi OS, Ubuntu, Kali or Retropie image flashed with Raspberry Pi Imager, then add dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d and dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-7inch to config.txt.
  • Brightness can be adjusted graphically via screen settings, via a Waveshare brightness application, or via terminal commands writing to /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness.
  • Display rotation can be set depending on OS version via the graphical interface, entries in /boot/cmdline.txt such as video=DSI-1:800x480M@60,rotate=90, or display_rotate in config.txt.
  • Touch rotation is configured synchronously with the display on newer systems; on older systems it must be adjusted separately via udev rules or X11 configuration files.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-7inch
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-7inch,dsi0
echo 100 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness
video=DSI-1:800x480M@60,rotate=90
display_rotate=1

Notes and version constraints

  • Compatibility with certain CM boards depends on the exact board type; verify before installation whether an external 15 cm DSI cable is required.
  • Rotation and touch steps differ by operating-system version (Trixie, Bookworm, Bullseye/Buster, Stretch/Jessie); follow only the instructions matching your installed system.
  • Older DSI LCD revisions (e.g., Rev2.1) may cause issues with Pi 5; seek manufacturer confirmation if unsure.
  • All changes to config.txt, cmdline.txt or system files require a reboot to take effect.
  • If uncertain about version-sensitive steps or missing context, have a human confirm the procedure.
