Summary

The Waveshare CM4-to-Pi4-Adapter allows a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (CM4) to be used on a board base that replicates the interfaces of the Raspberry Pi 4B. It provides four USB 3.0 ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port, a PoE header, and various other connectors for cameras and displays.

Technical overview

  • Standard CM4 socket supporting all Compute Module 4 variants
  • Four USB 3.0 ports with backward compatibility to USB 2.0/1.1
  • RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet port with 10/100/1000 Mbps auto-negotiation
  • PoE header for connecting compatible PoE HATs
  • Two micro HDMI outputs with 4K@30 fps capability
  • USB Type-C port for 5 V/2.5 A power supply or as an eMMC programming interface
  • MIPI CSI camera connector and MIPI DSI display connector (DISP1)
  • 40-pin GPIO header for HAT connections
  • IO-VREF switch to select CM4 IO logic voltage between 3.3 V and 1.8 V
  • System function switches for BT_DIS, WiFi_DIS, and WP_DIS

Notes and version constraints

  • The DISPLAY port layout differs from the Raspberry Pi 4B mainboard; compatibility with most Pi 4 cases is limited.
  • When programming via the micro USB port, no other devices may be connected to ensure CM4 power supply.
  • The CM4 must be powered at 5 V/2 A, otherwise it may shut down or lower its clock frequency.
  • Do not plug or unplug any devices while powering on.
  • The fan header only supports 5 V fans without speed regulation or measurement; it is not soldered by default.
  • CSI and DSI interfaces are disabled by default; using them occupies three I2C devices: I2C-10, I2C-11, and I2C-0.
  • Camera and display configuration depends on the OS version (Buster vs. Bullseye); steps require manual confirmation.
  • Power off the IO board before connecting cameras or DSI displays; reconnect power only after connections are made.
  • If /boot/dt-blob.bin already exists, simply rebooting may resolve DSI display issues.
