Technical overview

  • Sensor: OV5647, 5 megapixels, 70° FOV, dual-axis OIS with ±5° compensation.
  • Interface: MIPI CSI; the module connects via an FPC connector to the board's CSI port.
  • Supported platforms: all Raspberry Pi boards (including Pi 5 and the Zero series) as well as the RDK X3.
  • Drivers: libcamera or Raspicam depending on OS; newer systems recommend rpicam.
  • DSI (display) and CSI (camera) connectors look identical – pay attention to correct placement: the CSI port sits between the audio jack and HDMI on standard boards, next to power on the Zero series.
  • When using a non-official camera sensor, set camera_auto_detect=0 in config.txt and add the matching dtoverlay.
  • For binocular setups, two cameras can be parameterized via cam0/cam1.
  • Tuning files control image rendering; they can be adjusted or overridden per sensor, e.g. for NoIR variants.
  • Preview can be launched with rpicam-hello and closed via Alt+F4 or Ctrl+C.
  • In the RDK X3 context, an HDMI display is required; the camera works by default after power-on.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo apt-get update -y && sudo apt-get upgrade -y
sudo nano /boot/firmware/config.txt
dtoverlay=ov5647
dtoverlay=imx219,cam0
dtoverlay=ov5647,cam1
rpicam-hello
rpicam-hello -t 0
rpicam-hello --tuning-file /usr/share/libcamera/ipa/rpi/pisp/imx219_noir.json
sudo libcamera-hello -t 0
sudo libcamera-hello -t 0 --camera 0
cd /app/ai_inference/03_mipi_camera_sample && sudo python3 mipi_camera.py
export DISPLAY=:0

Notes and version constraints

  • No pricing, stock, certification, or warranty information is present in the source – such values must not be invented.
  • Driver compatibility depends on the specific Raspberry Pi board and operating system; verify the system with 'cat /etc/os-release' before installing.
  • On the RDK X3, if the preview fails, the trigger level of reset pin G (GPIO 19) may need to be set to high.
  • libcamera commands primarily apply to older Bullseye systems; on Bookworm, rpicam commands are recommended.
  • USB cameras do not support hot-plugging; Picamera2 must be fully restarted when cameras are added or removed.
  • The exact CSI port location varies by board type; for compute modules, check the carrier board layout.
