Summary

The PI4-FAN-PWM is a slim, lightweight heatsink housing with an integrated ultra-quiet 3510 fan. It supports PWM speed control and is fully compatible with the Raspberry Pi OS; other systems require manual driving via Python or C code.

Technical overview

  • Slim, lightweight heatsink with an integrated 3510 fan.
  • PWM speed regulation is natively supported by the Raspberry Pi OS.
  • Compatible only with the Raspberry Pi 4B.
  • Automatic speed control works only under the Raspberry Pi OS.
  • Package includes: 1× FAN Adapter (optional), 1× heatsink with PWM fan, 1× screwdriver, 2× M2.5×6 mm screws, 4× thermal pads, 1× instruction sheet.
  • For assembly, a thermal pad is applied to the Raspberry Pi 4B, then the enclosure is fastened from the rear with screws.
  • Wires connect directly to the Pi4B; the PWM pin can be connected to TXD (GPIO14), GPIO12, or GPIO18.
  • When using the FAN Adapter, the default PWM pin is D12 (GPIO12); switching to TXD or D18 requires changing a 0Ω resistor.
  • Under the Raspberry Pi OS, fan control is enabled via `sudo raspi-config`: Performance Options → Fan → Yes, enter pin 12 (or 14 if using TXD), and set the threshold to 60 °C.
  • Two demo programs drive the fan via RPi.GPIO; Demo1 switches to full duty at ≥40 °C, Demo2 stages duty cycle above 48 °C and 60 °C.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo raspi-config
pip freeze | grep RPi.GPIO
python3 pwm-fan.py

Notes and version constraints

  • Designed exclusively for the Raspberry Pi 4B – no compatibility with other Pi models is stated.
  • Automatic temperature control requires the official Raspberry Pi OS; other operating systems need custom drivers (Python/C).
  • The exact GPIO pin must be adjusted in the code depending on whether TXD (GPIO14), GPIO12, or GPIO18 is used.
  • The thresholds in the demos (40/48/60/65 °C) are example values and should be tuned as needed.
  • Using the FAN Adapter may require modifying a 0Ω resistor to switch the default pin – a hardware change that should be performed carefully.
