Summary
The Waveshare SX1302 LoRaWAN Gateway HAT connects a Raspberry Pi via the 40-pin GPIO header to a Mini-PCIe socket for the LoRa gateway module. It supports EU868 (863–870 MHz), offers +26 dBm transmit power and -141 dBm receive sensitivity at 125 kHz/SF12, and includes an optional GNSS module (GPS L1/BD B1) for time-stamping and positioning.

Technical overview
- Base module: Semtech SX1302/3 baseband chip with integrated PA/LNA; +26 dBm transmit power, -141 dBm receive sensitivity @125 kHz/SF12.
- Interfaces: SPI, I2C, UART; external 52-pin Mini-PCIe connector for integrating the module into embedded systems.
- GNSS option: GPS L1 (1575.42 MHz) and BD2 B1 (1561.098 MHz); positioning accuracy <2.5 m CEP; provides accurate clock and location info for the gateway.
- Operating temperature range: -40 °C to +85 °C; module dimensions: 50.95 mm × 30 mm.
- LoRaWAN protocol: Class A/B/C nodes, OTAA join flow using AppEUI/DevEUI/AppKey; regional frequency bands such as EU868 must be respected.
- Demo environment: The wiki demo is based on The Things Stack (TTS) and the official Semtech SX1302 library; for self-hosted cloud servers, lorawan-stack or ChirpStack can be used.
- Raspberry Pi 4B: Demo is primarily designed for Pi 4B; when using Pi 5, the GPIO pins need to be adjusted.
- Hardware connection: HAT plugs onto the 40-pin GPIO header; place the GPS antenna with the unlabeled side facing up in open sky area.
- Power consumption: Transmit 710 mA @5 V (GPS on), Receive 99 mA @5 V (GPS on), Sleep 41 mA @5 V (GPS off).
Commands and examples – verify before use:
enable_uart=1
#dtoverlay=pi3-miniuart-bt (auskommentieren bei Pi 3B)
sudo reboot
Notes and version constraints
- The wiki demo is validated only for Raspberry Pi 4B; for Pi 5 the GPIO pin assignments must be manually adjusted – verify before deployment.
- SPI errors at gateway startup are often caused by SPI not being enabled or poor contact at the Mini-PCIe gold fingers; enable SPI and press the module firmly.
- The demo uses The Things Stack (TTS); when using other network services (e.g., ChirpStack, lorawan-stack), configuration steps must be verified separately.
- Regional frequency parameters (EU868 vs. other bands) must comply with local radio regulations – confirm before commissioning.
- Version-specific steps (e.g., drivers, libraries) may differ across OS versions; verify current compatibility manually.
