Technical overview

  • Three USB 3.2 Gen1 ports (backward-compatible with USB 3.0/2.0/1.1).
  • One Gigabit Ethernet port supporting 1000M/100M/10M autonegotiation.
  • External USB-C 5V DC power input for stable supply when driving high-power devices.
  • One power LED and three port LEDs for operating-status indication.
  • Standard Raspberry Pi 40-pin GPIO expansion header.
  • Key onboard components: VL817-Q7 USB hub chip, RTL8153B USB-to-Gigabit-Ethernet converter, TGE-2401SR Ethernet transformer, MX25L512EOI-10G flash chip.
  • With Raspberry Pi 4, each USB port can reach up to 5 Gbps – roughly ten times faster than USB 2.0.
  • Also usable with other Raspberry Pi versions and directly on a PC (Windows).

Commands and examples – verify before use:

cd ../..
cd media/pi/<disk-name>
sudo sh -c "sync && echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches"
dd if=/dev/zero of=./test_write count=2000 bs=1024k
dd if=./test_write of=/dev/null count=2000 bs=1024k

Notes and version constraints

  • The exact disk label under /media/pi must be substituted before running the dd checks; the source only gives a placeholder example.
  • When benchmarking on Ubuntu, select the correct partition in the Benchmark menu; selecting the wrong one may corrupt data.
  • When using a portable SSD or other high-power device, external 5 V DC power via the USB-C port is mandatory.
  • If mouse/keyboard do not work: re-plug the USB cable and check or replace the USB 3.0 adapter – the source lists this as a common cause.
  • Compatibility with older Pi models is not detailed in the source; confirm the specific Pi generation before purchase.
