Technical overview

  • The board uses the RP2040A microcontroller developed by Raspberry Pi, featuring dual Cortex-M0+ cores running up to 133 MHz.
  • It includes 264 KB of SRAM and 2 MB of flash memory, plus an on-chip temperature sensor.
  • Interfaces include a USB Type-C port, two SPI, two I2C, and two UART channels, four 12-bit ADCs, and 16 PWM channels.
  • All unoccupied pins are led out in a compact form factor; 20 pins are accessible via headers, the rest only by soldering.
  • Castellated edge processing allows the module to be soldered directly onto carrier boards.
  • The device supports USB 1.1 host and device modes as well as drag-and-drop programming over mass storage.
  • For MicroPython, Thonny IDE is recommended, with firmware flashed by holding BOOT while connecting to create a removable USB drive.
  • For C/C++, the Pico VSCode extension is used; the SDK package must be copied to C:\Users\username\.pico-sdk.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

set(PICO_BOARD pico CACHE STRING "Board type")

Notes and version constraints

  • No power management is present: when using battery power, add a diode to prevent backflow; overcharging or over-discharging can cause damage.
  • Only 5 V or 3.3 V can be connected directly; other voltage sources require additional circuitry.
  • When manually updating firmware, hold BOOT and RESET simultaneously, releasing RESET first.
  • The exact minimum sleep current (about 2 mA) should be verified with the manufacturer for your specific project.
  • Missing context about certain versions or updates may affect the steps; please seek human confirmation.
