Summary

The Pico LCD 1.3 is a 1.3-inch IPS LCD module for the Raspberry Pi Pico/Pico 2 with a resolution of 240×240 pixels and 65K color depth (RGB565). It is driven via a 4-wire SPI interface and uses an ST7789VW driver chip.

Technical overview

  • Display: 1.3-inch IPS, 240(H) × 240(V) pixels, 65K colors (RGB565)
  • Driver chip: ST7789VW; supports RGB444, RGB565 and RGB666 color bit depths
  • Interface: 4-wire SPI; signals: SCL, DIN, CSX, DCX, RESX, BL
  • Supply voltage: 2.6 V to 5.5 V; operating current approx. 40 mA
  • Module dimensions: 26.5 mm (W) × 52.00 mm (H); display area 23.4 × 23.4 mm
  • Pico pin mapping: DIN→GP11, CLK→GP10, CS→GP9, DC→GP8, RST→GP12, BL→GP13
  • User keys A/B/X/Y on GP15/GP17/GP19/GP21; joystick UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT/CTRL on GP2/GP18/GP16/GP20/GP3
  • Supported firmware: MicroPython rp2-pico-20210418-v1.15.uf2 (Pico) or rp2-pico2-20240809-v1.24.0.uf2 (Pico 2)
  • C/C++ demo is compiled with CMake; the generated main.uf2 is copied to the board via the USB bootloader
  • Thonny IDE is used for Python demos; the script file is named Pico-LCD-1.3.py

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo wget https://files.waveshare.com/wiki/common/Pico_code.7z
7z x Pico_code.7z -o./Pico_code
cmake -DPICO_BOARD=pico -DPICO_PLATFORM=rp2040 ..
cmake -DPICO_BOARD=pico2 -DPICO_PLATFORM=rp2350 ..
make -j9
cp main.uf2 /media/pi/RPI-RP2/
cp main.uf2 /media/pi/RP2350

Notes and version constraints

  • Exact SPI timing (CPHA/CPOL) depends on the firmware version; when changing drivers, initialization must be re-verified.
  • The pin mapping assumes correct module orientation – reversed mounting causes malfunctions.
  • The demo source code is continuously updated according to the source; older versions may contain incompatible API calls.
  • If Thonny has issues, the IDE should be upgraded (sudo apt upgrade thonny), since older versions lack Pico support.
  • The exact COM port selection during the first Arduino upload is device-dependent and must be manually confirmed.
