Technical overview

  • Resolution: 1872 × 1404 pixels; display size: 209.66 × 157.25 mm; dot pitch: 0.112 × 0.112 mm
  • Operating voltage: 5 V; full refresh < 1 s; refresh power ≈ 1.2 W; standby power ≈ 0.1 W
  • Colors: black/white with 16 grayscale levels (1–4 bit)
  • Interfaces: SPI, I80, USB, I2C; GPIO header matches the 40-pin Raspberry Pi standard
  • Raspberry Pi SPI pin mapping: MISO P9, MOSI P10, SCK P11, CS P8 (active low), RST P17 (active low), HRDY P24 (low when busy)
  • The DIP switch must be set to SPI mode before starting SPI communication
  • Library choice: BCM2835 recommended for Pi 4; lg library for Pi 5; gpiod optional
  • Demo invocation: “sudo ./epd -1.50 1” (read the VCOM value from the FPC, mode 1 as parameter)

Notes and version constraints

  • The VCOM value must be read from the FPC before execution; the exact value is model-dependent and requires confirmation
  • Color deviation may occur at low temperatures; stabilize at 25 °C for 6 hours before refreshing
  • Displaying the same image for long periods can cause irreversible burn-in; change the image every 24 hours
  • Direct sunlight dries out charged particles – irreversible; indoor use recommended only
  • Hot-plugging is not supported; connect all cables before powering on
  • The FPC is fragile; reinforce it with tape during development
  • USB development on Windows requires an NDA with the Waveshare team; currently unavailable for individual users
  • Refresh time and power figures are experimental values; actual performance may vary
