Summary

The Waveshare 1.3-inch OLED Module (C) is a 64×128-pixel display driven by an SH1107 controller. It supports 4-wire SPI and I2C interfaces, operates at 3.3 V, and is intended for developers interfacing it with Raspberry Pi, STM32, or Arduino.

Technical overview

  • Resolution: 64 × 128 pixels; display area 14.7 × 29.42 mm; pixel size 0.15 × 0.15 mm; module dimensions 30 × 39.5 mm.
  • Form factor: black/white monochrome display; the SH1107 controller has 128×128-bit SRAM, of which only half is used for the 64×128 resolution.
  • Interfaces: 4-wire SPI (default) and I2C; switching is done via a solderable resistor on the back (IM to GND = SPI, IM to VCC = I2C).
  • I2C address: the DC input selects the slave address; when DC = Low, the 7-bit I2C address is 0x3C.
  • Pinout: VCC (3.3 V), GND, DIN (MOSI), CLK (SCLK), CS (active low), DC (Data/Command), RST (reset, active low).
  • Raspberry Pi wiring: VCC→3.3 V pin, GND→GND, DIN→GPIO19 (SDA), CLK→GPIO23 (SCL), CS→GPIO24 (CE0), DC→GPIO22, RST→GPIO13.
  • SPI protocol mode: Mode 3 (CPOL=1, CPHA=1), MSB first; per source, SCL is high in idle state and data transmission starts at the second edge.
  • Example commands: use 'sudo raspi-config' to enable SPI/I2C then reboot; choose libraries BCM2835, WiringPi, lgpio or Python packages depending on OS version (Bookworm supports only lgpio).

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo raspi-config
sudo reboot
sudo make clean
sudo make -j 8
sudo ./main 1.3c
cd python/example
sudo python3 OLED_1in3_c_test.py

Notes and version constraints

  • Switching between SPI and I2C requires soldering on the module’s back side – verify the exact solder point against the datasheet before soldering.
  • Under Bookworm, BCM2835 and WiringPi are unavailable; only lgpio can be installed.
  • Displaying the same image for extended periods can cause afterimages and damage the OLED – vary displayed content regularly.
  • Before powering up, ensure correct polarity (no reverse power); the module requires active program control since there is no backlight.
