Summary
The Waveshare UPS HAT is an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for the Raspberry Pi family. It uses the standard 40-pin GPIO header, communicates over I2C, and provides a stable 5 V output with up to 2.5 A continuous current. Two 3.7 V 18650 batteries (not included) allow operation without mains power.

Technical overview
- Interface: standard Raspberry Pi 40-pin GPIO expansion header; fits common Pi boards.
- Communication: I2C bus for real-time monitoring of battery voltage, current, power, and remaining capacity.
- Protection circuits: overcharge/discharge protection, overcurrent protection, short-circuit protection, reverse-polarity protection, plus equalizing charge feature.
- Voltage regulator: onboard 5 V regulator with up to 2.5 A continuous output current.
- USB output: separate 5 V USB port for powering other boards or devices.
- Indicators: LEDs indicate correct battery connection; warning LED lights up if polarity is reversed.
- Charger: supplied 8.4 V/2 A charger plugs into the 8.4 V charging port.
- Dimensions: 56 mm × 85 mm, 3.0 mm mounting hole; total height after mounting on the Pi approx. 42.05 mm.
Commands and examples – verify before use:
sudo raspi-config

python3 INA219.py
sudo apt-get install i2c-tools
sudo i2cdetect -y 1
Notes and version constraints
- Batteries are not included – 3.7 V 18650 lithium cells must be sourced separately.
- First-time setup: the board may not work until the batteries have been charged; fully charge them before first use.
- Use only the supplied 8.4 V/2 A charger – other adapters can damage the board.
- Negative current values mean the batteries are discharging (powering the Pi); positive values indicate charging.
- The default software assumes 5200 mAh (2 × 2600 mAh cells). If you use higher-capacity cells, the program parameters must be adjusted accordingly.
- Lithium batteries age and have limited cycle life; replace them when max cycles are reached or after two years of service, whichever comes first.
- I2C address per source is 0x42; verify on your system as it may differ.
