Summary

The Waveshare 6inch HD e-Paper HAT uses the IT8951 controller, resolves at 1448×1072 and is driven via USB, SPI, I80 or I2C. It is suitable for Raspberry Pi (HAT), Windows PC (USB) and STM32 (SPI/I80).

Technical overview

  • Resolution: 1448 × 1072 pixels; display size approx. 122.356 mm × 90.584 mm; dot pitch 0.0845 mm.
  • Operating voltage 5 V; refresh power typ. 0.6 W; standby power typ. 0.3 W.
  • Graphics modes: 2–16 gray levels (1–4 bit); colors are black/white only.
  • Full refresh takes under 1 s; a flickering effect during global refresh is normal.
  • Viewing angle > 170°; operating temperature 0–50 °C; storage temperature −25–70 °C.
  • Interfaces: USB/SPI/I80/I2C; HAT fits the Raspberry Pi 40-pin GPIO header.
  • The raw panel requires a separate IT8951 driver board; the HAT already includes it.
  • At low temperatures color cast may appear; acclimatize for 6 hours at 25 °C before refreshing.
  • FPC and glass panel are fragile; reinforcing the FPC with tape is recommended during development.
  • Connect all cables before powering on – hot-plugging is not supported.

Notes and version constraints

  • The stated refresh time < 1 s is an experimental value; actual timing may vary.
  • Power figures (0.6 W / 0.3 W) are measured values and can differ depending on driver board and usage.
  • The source contains placeholders such as {{{name3}}} through {{{name6}}}; these values are missing from the supplied text and must be confirmed by the supplier.
  • Demo commands reference the 19 March 2020 release; newer firmware/driver versions may require different parameters.
  • The VCOM value must be read directly from the FPC and passed as a parameter – the exact value is not given here.
  • Outdoor use requires UV protection and avoidance of direct sunlight, because charged particles dry out and refresh may fail permanently (irreversible).
  • Refresh the screen at least every 24 h to avoid burn-in of a static image.
  • After deep-sleep mode, the display must be re-initialized in software before it can be refreshed again.
