Summary

The Waveshare Li-ion Battery HAT (part number WSAL15141) is a Raspberry Pi expansion board featuring a switched 5V output and bi-directional quick charge. It uses rechargeable 14500 lithium batteries (3.7V nominal) and can power the Pi via the GPIO header or USB connections.

Technical overview

  • The battery must be charged for about one minute before first use; without this activation step, the module produces no output.
  • Five LEDs indicate discharge state: their on/off/blinking pattern corresponds to capacity ranges from 80–100% down to 0%.
  • During charging, the five LEDs follow a similar logic across capacity ranges from 100% down to below 20%.
  • The module cannot function as a UPS: disconnecting the AC adapter causes a brief power interruption that reboots the Raspberry Pi.
  • The micro USB port can directly power the Raspberry Pi's USB power input.
  • Due to its height, stacking additional modules on top is not possible.
  • Battery specification: rechargeable 14500 cell, 3.7V nominal, 4.2V full charge, 3V cutoff voltage.
  • An 800mAh battery powers a Raspberry Pi 3B+ for about 50 minutes and a Raspberry Pi Zero W for two to three hours at idle.
  • Larger capacities are achievable by soldering, though this is not recommended for non-professionals.
  • Output capability: up to 4A current with up to 96% conversion efficiency, per the chip datasheet.

Notes and version constraints

  • No commands are specified in the source text; therefore this field remains empty.
  • Do not use as a UPS – unplugging the charger causes a brief reboot of the Raspberry Pi.
  • Insert the battery with correct polarity; reversed connection triggers the warning LED and requires flipping the cell.
  • Do not mix old and new batteries or cells from different brands.
  • Lithium cells age both cyclically and chronologically; replace them upon reaching maximum cycle life or after two years.
  • Only use compatible, tested 14500 cells; ordinary non-rechargeable cells will not work.
  • Do not connect the charging cable while replacing the battery.
  • If there is no output: check connection polarity and note the warning LED.
