Technical overview
- The nRF51822 SoC supports Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy and 2.4 GHz RF features.
- The companion BLE400 mother board provides a battery holder, multiple power-supply options, accessible I/Os, an integrated CP2102 debugger, LEDs and user keys.
- The evaluation kit consists of the BLE400 mother board and the Core51822 wireless module.
- Recommended PC environment: Windows XP or Windows 7; nRFgo Studio v1.14 or later; Keil MDK-ARM Lite v4.54 or later; J-Link Software v4.52b or later.
- For programming, install the nRF51 SDK; if installation errors occur, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 may be required.
- blinky_example runs without an OS and executes directly after download; the LED visibly blinks.
- ble_app_hrs additionally requires the S110 SoftDevice (Bluetooth protocol stack), e.g. s110_nrf51822_6.0.0_softdevice.hex.
- For mobile connectivity, use nRFToolbox (Android) or nRF Utility (iOS); the app displays received data only after 19 characters are received.
Commands and examples – verify before use:
Send 'Y' or 'y' over serial to start broadcasting (LED0 lights up).
Serial settings: baud rate 38400, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit.
nRFgo Studio: select 'nRF51 Programming' > 'Erase all' before programming.
Keil: open blinky.uvproj, press F7 to build, then click Download.
For ble_app_hrs: nRFgo Studio > 'Program SoftDevice' > Browse (choose s110_nrf51822_6.0.0_softdevice.hex) > Program.
Notes and version constraints
- J-Link firmware may fail to cooperate with the Nordic SDK; in that case use nRFgo Studio > 'Program Application'.
- Initial output from the factory program is for self-test and can be ignored.
- The mobile device must support Bluetooth 4.0 and have the appropriate app installed to detect the signal.
- Compatibility with other boards and availability of specific firmware versions should be verified beforehand.
