Technical overview

  • Operating voltage: 3.3 V or 5 V; default operation at 3.3 V.
  • Driver chip: SSD1306; resolution 128×64 pixels; display size 0.96 inch.
  • Interfaces: 3-wire SPI, 4-wire SPI, and I2C are selectable via two resistors (BS0/BS1) on the back of the module.
  • By default, 4-wire SPI communication is active (BS0=0, BS1=0).
  • For 3-wire SPI: connect BS0 to VCC and BS1 to GND.
  • For I2C: connect BS0 to GND and BS1 to VCC; the DC pin sets the I2C address (GND → address 0x3C).
  • Pinout: VCC, GND, DIN (SPI data input), CLK (SPI clock input), CS (chip select, low active), D/C (command/data signal), RES (reset, low active).
  • Operating temperature: −20 °C to 70 °C; storage temperature: −30 °C to 80 °C; viewing angle >160°.
  • When connecting to a Raspberry Pi, use a 7-pin cable; pin mapping: DIN→MOSI/SDA (BCM19/3), CLK→SCLK/SCL (BCM23/5), CS→CE0 (BCM24), DC→BCM25 (pin 22), RES→BCM27 (pin 13).

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo raspi-config
sudo reboot
sudo ./main 0.96
sudo python3 OLED_0in96_test.py

Notes and version constraints

  • The exact resistor wiring for interface selection must be verified physically on the module; the source only specifies logical states (0/1).
  • When using I2C, the slave address depends on the DC pin; incorrect wiring may cause communication errors.
  • The source contains placeholders ({{{...}}), indicating incomplete documentation; certain values may be missing or outdated.
  • Compatibility with specific Raspberry Pi OS versions (e.g., Bookworm) is limited: only lgpio is available; BCM2835 and WiringPi cannot be installed.
  • Before operation, ensure the correct interface is selected via hardware configuration; otherwise communication may fail.
