Technical overview

  • Sensor chip: Sony IMX708 with 12 megapixels and auto-focus.
  • Connection: CSI connector; on the Raspberry Pi 5 between the audio jack and the HDMI port; on Pi Zero next to the power connector.
  • The new hardware version no longer includes an EEPROM chip; old and new versions are shipped randomly.
  • Supported sensor list: IMX708 is supported on all Raspberry Pi boards and requires the libcamera driver type.
  • For the official Camera Module 3 no config.txt entry is needed; for non-official cameras add dtoverlay=imx708 to /boot/config.txt or /boot/firmware/config.txt.
  • Two cameras at once: cam0 and cam1 are specified by appending cam0/cam1 after the respective dtoverlay lines.
  • On Bookworm systems the libcamera-* commands were replaced by rpicam-*; libcamera remains available for now but will be deprecated in the future.
  • Start preview with: sudo libcamera-hello -t 0 or rpicam-hello.
  • Capture a JPEG with: rpicam-jpeg -o test.jpg; resolution adjustable via --width/--height.
  • Exposure control: --shutter and --gain set fixed exposure and gain; --ev adjusts exposure compensation in stops.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo apt-get upgrade -y
sudo nano /boot/config.txt
sudo nano /boot/firmware/config.txt

sudo libcamera-hello -t 0 --camera 0
sudo libcamera-hello -t 0 --camera 1
rpicam-hello
rpicam-hello -t 0
rpicam-jpeg -o test.jpg
rpicam-jpeg -o test.jpg -t 2000 --width 640 --height 480
rpicam-jpeg -o test.jpg -t 2000 --shutter 20000 --gain 1.5
rpicam-jpeg --ev -0.5 -o darker.jpg
rpicam-jpeg --ev 0 -o normal.jpg
rpicam-jpeg --ev 0.5 -o brighter.jpg

Notes and version constraints

  • The text contains incomplete templates ({{...}}) and truncated sections; some details may be missing or vary depending on firmware/OS version.
  • On older devices (Pi 3 and earlier under Bullseye), Glamor may need to be enabled for the preview window to work correctly.
  • USB cameras only support software rendering (Qt); hot-plugging is not supported.
  • Exact compatibility with specific carrier boards for Compute Modules must be verified case by case.
