Summary

The BME68X environmental sensor measures temperature, humidity, barometric pressure and gases via I2C or SPI. It is suitable for smart home, mobile applications and wearables.

Technical overview

  • Four-in-one sensor: temperature, humidity, barometric pressure and gas resistance (VOC).
  • Communication over I2C (default) or SPI; I2C address configurable via ADDR pin (0x77 high, 0x76 low).
  • Onboard voltage translator supports 3.3 V / 5 V levels.
  • BME680/BME688 include a mini MOX gas sensor; IAQ calculation requires the non-open-source Bosch BSEC library with licensing terms.
  • Connection examples for Raspberry Pi (I2C/SPI), Arduino, ESP32 and Raspberry Pi Pico are included in the demo package.
  • Raspberry Pi: enable I2C/SPI drivers via raspi-config, reboot, then verify address with i2cdetect -y 1.
  • C demo: set USEIIC macro to 1 for I2C, 0 for SPI; compile with make.
  • Python demo is I2C-only; install the bme680 library via pip3.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo raspi-config
sudo reboot
lsmod
sudo apt-get install i2c-tools
i2cdetect -y 1
wget https://files.waveshare.com/upload/4/49/BME68X_Environmental_Sensor_code.zip
unzip BME68X_Environmental_Sensor_code.zip
sudo chmod -R 777 BME68X_Environmental_Sensor_code
cd BME68X_Environmental_Sensor_code/RaspberryPi/C
nano main.c
sudo make clean
sudo make
sudo ./bme68x
sudo pip3 install bme680
cd BME68X_Environmental_Sensor_code/RaspberryPi/Python/examples
sudo python3 read-all.py

Notes and version constraints

  • The BSEC library is proprietary; usage requires reviewing Bosch's licensing terms.
  • I2C address depends on the state of the ADDR pin (NC = 0x77, GND = 0x76); avoid address conflicts when using multiple devices.
  • Demo files must be downloaded and unzipped; paths may vary by system.
  • SPI connection on Raspberry Pi uses pin 27 (wiringPi) for CS; verify exact wiring before soldering.
  • Gas measurement returns only a total VOC value; distinguishing individual gases requires additional development (AI function optional).
