Technical overview

  • Sensor: OV9281, monochrome, 1 megapixel, global shutter.
  • Connection: CSI port; on the Raspberry Pi 5 two CSI ports are available, both usable.
  • Supported boards: All Raspberry Pi models (including Compute Module).
  • Recommended driver: libcamera; according to the source, Raspicam is not supported for the OV9281.
  • Configuration: Set "camera_auto_detect=0" in config.txt and add "dtoverlay=ov9281".
  • Preview: "sudo libcamera-hello -t 0" opens a persistent preview; close via Alt+F4 or Ctrl+C in the terminal.
  • JPEG capture: "libcamera-jpeg -o test.jpg -t 2000 --width 640 --height 480" saves a full-frame JPEG.
  • Exposure control: "--shutter 20000 --gain 1.5" sets exposure time and gain manually.
  • Stereoscopic setup: Two cameras are distinguished via "cam0"/"cam1", e.g. "dtparam=imx219,cam0" and "dtparam=ov5647,cam1".
  • Tuning files: Libcamera loads a tuning profile per camera; if deviations occur, a custom JSON file can be loaded, e.g. "--tuning-file /path/to/file.json".

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo libcamera-hello -t 0
libcamera-jpeg -o test.jpg -t 2000 --width 640 --height 480
libcamera-jpeg -o test.jpg -t 2000 --shutter 20000 --gain 1.5
sudo nano /boot/config.txt
sudo nano /boot/firmware/config.txt

Notes and version constraints

  • Exact compatibility with specific board revisions depends on the firmware version; verify before purchase that the board provides the required CSI pins.
  • When using the Compute Module, the exact location of the CSI port on the carrier system must be confirmed.
  • Adding an external JSON file (e.g., for IMX290) requires network access and correct permissions.
  • If image quality is insufficient, a custom tuning profile should be created and tested.
  • All commands must be run with root privileges; incorrect configurations may prevent the system from booting.
