Summary

The CM4-IO-WIRELESS-BASE-B is an industrial expansion module for the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4. It provides, among others, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI, USB 2.0, RS485, CAN and an M.2 B KEY socket for optional 4G/5G modules.

Technical overview

  • The module is based on the Raspberry Pi CM4 and features an M.2 B KEY slot that supports 4G/5G modules via a USB channel.
  • Power input: 7 to 36 V DC; a minimum supply of 5 V / 2.5 A or 12 V / 1 A is recommended.
  • RS485 and CAN are disabled by default and are enabled through entries in /boot/config.txt.
  • The USB 2.0 port is also disabled by default; enable it by adding 'dtoverlay=dwc2,dr_mode=host' to config.txt.
  • An onboard UPS module with a lithium battery (CR1220 holder) provides backup power for the CM4.
  • The fan header supports standard fans at 5 V or 12 V; voltage selection is done via a jumper.
  • For 4G/5G configuration, minicom is used over /dev/ttyUSB2, followed by AT commands to switch modem modes.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo nano /boot/config.txt
dtoverlay=uart3
dtoverlay=uart5
dtparam=spi=on
dtoverlay=mcp2515-can0,oscillator=16000000,interrupt=25
reboot
sudo ip link set can0 up type can bitrate 1000000
sudo ifconfig can0 txqueuelen 65536
sudo apt-get install can-utils
candump can0
cansend can0 000#11.22.33.44
echo 6 > /sys/class/gpio/export
echo out > /sys/class/gpio/gpio6/direction
echo 0 > /sys/class/gpio/gpio6/value
sudo apt-get install minicom
sudo minicom -D /dev/ttyUSB2
AT+CUSBPIDSWITCH=9011,1,1
sudo dhclient -v usb0

Notes and version constraints

  • Not all 4G/5G modules mentioned in the wiki are guaranteed compatible; only SIM7600G-H-M.2, SIM8202G-M2 and SIM8200EA-M2 are explicitly listed.
  • On first connection of the battery, there may be no power output; the BOOT button on the UPS module must be pressed to activate the output.
  • Lithium batteries have a limited cycle life and should be replaced when they reach their maximum cycles or after two years.
  • The operating temperature range is approximately -20 to +85°C; exceeding this range may impair performance.
  • When programming via USB-C, no other devices should be connected to ensure proper power supply to the CM4.
  • Switching the 4G/5G module takes about 30 seconds if the antenna or SIM card is not connected before powering on the module.
