Technical overview

  • Sensor: OV9281, monochrome, 1 MP, global shutter
  • Interface: CSI; connector looks like the DSI connector – mind correct position when connecting
  • CSI port is between the audio jack and HDMI port; on Pi Zero it is beside the power connector
  • For Raspberry Pi 5: align the metal side of the FPC cable toward the LAN port; either CSI port can be used
  • Bookworm configuration: edit /boot/firmware/config.txt, set camera_auto_detect=0 and add dtoverlay=ov9281
  • Uses the libcamera driver (not Raspicam)
  • Start preview with: sudo libcamera-hello -t 0
  • Close the window via Alt+F4 or terminate in terminal with Ctrl+C
  • Capture a JPEG: libcamera-jpeg -o test.jpg
  • Exposure control available via --shutter and --gain

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo libcamera-hello -t 0
libcamera-jpeg -o test.jpg
libcamera-jpeg -o test.jpg -t 2000 --width 640 --height 480
libcamera-jpeg -o test.jpg -t 2000 --shutter 20000 --gain 1.5
libcamera-still
libcamera-vid
libcamera-raw
libcamera-hello --tuning-file /usr/share/libcamera/ipa/raspberrypi/imx219_noir.json
libcamera-hello --info-text "focus %focus"

Notes and version constraints

  • Source contains template placeholders ({{{name2}}} etc.) – these were ignored
  • Only libcamera driver supported; no Raspicam support for OV9281
  • No IR filter present; IR LEDs can be added directly for night capture
  • Version-specific config paths: older systems use /boot/config.txt, Bookworm uses /boot/firmware/config.txt
  • Exact focus value (%focus) is module-dependent and may require a custom tuning file entry
  • No price, stock, or warranty information included in the source
