Summary

The JetBot ROS AI Kit is an AI robot based on the NVIDIA Jetson Nano Dev Kit, compatible with the open-source NVIDIA JetBot project. It combines a Raspberry Pi RP2040 as real-time microcontroller and the Jetson Nano as AI host, supporting SLAM mapping, vision processing, and voice interaction.

Technical overview

  • Two control levels: The microcontroller (Raspberry Pi RP2040) handles real-time control; the Jetson Nano serves as the AI host for deep learning.
  • The expansion battery pack consists of three 18650 cells (3 × 2600 mAh), delivering up to 12.6 V output.
  • An onboard S-8254AA + AO4407A protection circuit guards against overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent, and short circuits.
  • The INA219 current/voltage monitor enables real-time monitoring of battery voltage and charging current.
  • A 0.91-inch OLED display (128 × 32) shows real-time data such as IP address, memory, and battery status.
  • The MPU9250 IMU sensor provides posture data for accurate direction determination.
  • Coded DC gear motors support PID control and output wheel odometry data.
  • Via I2C slave mode, the system is fully compatible with the open-source NVIDIA JetBot program without porting effort.

Notes and version constraints

  • Before assembly, set the power switch to "OFF" and disconnect the power supply to avoid short circuits or device damage.
  • When installing, mount the Jetson Nano first, then install the battery; when disassembling, remove the battery first, then remove the Jetson Nano.
  • Tighten only half-turns on the four studs holding the Jetson Nano until pogo pins make proper contact; overtightening can cause poor pin contact.
  • On first battery connection, no power may be output initially; charge for a few seconds to activate the protection chip before normal use.
  • Do not continue using a battery whose positive insulating pad is damaged, as it may cause a short circuit or fire.
  • Do not mix old and new lithium batteries, or use unreliable chargers.
  • Replace lithium batteries once their cycle life expires or after two years of use, whichever comes first.
  • If IMU calibration fails (LED does not flash), press RESET or re-flash the firmware demo.
  • Excessive audio volume under insufficient current causes stuttering; lower the volume to an appropriate level.
  • If the TF card is not recognized on Windows after flashing the Jetson Nano image, delete the existing volume via Disk Management and create a new formatted volume.
