Summary

Concise technical guide for the OV9281-120 mono camera (1 MP, global shutter) for all Raspberry Pi boards. Covers CSI hardware connection, system configuration, libcamera commands and warnings.

Technical overview

  • Sensor chip: OV9281; supported on all Raspberry Pi boards; usable only with the libcamera driver.
  • Connection via the CSI port; insert the FPC cable with the metal side facing the HDMI or network port (depending on board).
  • Configure /boot/config.txt or /boot/firmware/config.txt (Bookworm): set 'camera_auto_detect=0' and append 'dtoverlay=ov9281' at the end of the file.
  • Start preview with 'sudo libcamera-hello -t 0'; close via Alt+F4 or Ctrl+C in the terminal.
  • Capture a still JPEG: 'libcamera-jpeg -o test.jpg -t 2000 --width 640 --height 480'.
  • Manually control exposure: '--shutter 20000 --gain 1.5' sets analog sensor gain; excess is applied as digital ISP gain.
  • Binocular arrangement on CM4 carrier boards or Pi 5: append 'cam0'/'cam1' to the dtoverlay lines.
  • Per FAQ: FOV approx. 97° horizontal and 56° vertical; fixed focus at approx. 0.7 m; lens has a 650 nm optical filter; MIPI CSI interface; PH1.0-15PIN FFC ZIP connector.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo apt-get update -y
sudo apt-get upgrade -y
sudo nano /boot/config.txt
sudo nano /boot/firmware/config.txt
camera_auto_detect=0
dtoverlay=ov9281
sudo libcamera-hello -t 0
sudo libcamera-hello -t 0 --camera 0
sudo libcamera-hello -t 0 --camera 1
libcamera-jpeg -o test.jpg
libcamera-jpeg -o test.jpg -t 2000 --width 640 --height 480
libcamera-jpeg -o test.jpg -t 2000 --shutter 20000 --gain 1.5
libcamera-hello --tuning-file /usr/share/libcamera/ipa/raspberrypi/imx219_noir.json
libcamera-hello --info-text "focus %focus"

Notes and version constraints

  • Source material contains placeholders and incomplete sections; some command parameters may be version-sensitive – verify on the target system before running.
  • The config file path differs by OS version (Bullseye vs. Bookworm); using the wrong path prevents detection.
  • Fixed focus at approx. 0.7 m means shots closer than this distance will be out of focus.
  • The 650 nm filter limits the spectral sensitivity range; not suitable for pure IR capture without additional filtering.
  • No price, stock, warranty or certification information is present in the source – these values must not be stated here.
