Summary

The Waveshare adapter allows a Raspberry Pi Zero or Zero 2W to be used in place of a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B/B+. It provides four USB ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port and an HDMI port, and its GPIO headers are compatible with 3B-series expansion boards.

Technical overview

  • Supports Raspberry Pi Zero and Zero 2W as an alternative to Pi 3 Model B/B+
  • Four USB 2.0/1.1 channels for peripherals
  • Gigabit Ethernet via RTL8152B chip with one RJ45 port (10/100 M adaptive)
  • GPIO header on the Zero board; position matches the physical height of the 3B series, so 3B expansion boards fit directly
  • USB switch: switching to 'USB' connects the Ethernet and USB-A ports to the PWR/USB input; switching to 'Zero' connects them to the Zero board
  • HDMI port available for video output
  • Adapter dimensions are documented under 'Dimensions' in the wiki
  • Schematic and official Raspberry Pi documents are available in the Resources section

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo nano /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/0bda:8151
# Realtek RTL8151
TargetVendor=0x0bda
TargetProduct=8152
MessageContent="555342430860d9a9c0000000800006e0000000000000000000000000"
sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/40-usb_modeswitch.rules
# Custom usb_modeswitch rules
ATTR{idVendor}=="0bda", ATTR{idProduct}=="8151", RUN+="usb_modeswitch '/%k'"
echo "dtoverlay=dwc2,dr_mode=host

Notes and version constraints

  • Ethernet may not be recognized when booting from USB because the chip can act as a virtual CD-ROM on reset – fix via usb_modeswitch configuration
  • With Zero 2W: mouse/keyboard unresponsive after switching to 'Zero' due to different USB interface – add dtoverlay=dwc2,dr_mode=host to /boot/config.txt
  • Verify exact dimensions and compatibility with specific expansion boards before purchase
  • Commands listed assume a Linux system with root access
  • Version-sensitive steps (kernel/driver versions) may require manual confirmation
