Summary

Technical guide for the Waveshare module that converts a serial RS485 interface into an IP-based network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet and can forward Modbus data over MQTT.

Technical overview

  • The module provides an RS485 interface and connects it to an IP network via Wi-Fi or an Ethernet port.
  • It supports forwarding Modbus data over MQTT.
  • One FAQ answer lists the default module IP as 10.10.100.254; another lists 10.10.110.254 – please clarify before commissioning.
  • A Windows host tool is available for configuration; it locates the device IP using port 48899 and keyword www.waveshare.com.
  • Wi-Fi operation: In AP mode up to 24 devices can connect; optimal range is about 50 m in open space with a 3 dBi antenna.
  • Ethernet operation: Two software variants exist – Z-Ver runs in bridge mode (devices on Ethernet get their IP from the AP); N-Ver runs in router mode (the module creates its own subnet, default 10.10.100.254).
  • For TCP/UDP communication, the client's remote IP and port must match the server's local IP and port; firewall settings should be checked.
  • Modbus communication: baud rate is typically set to 9600 or 115200 bps; device address and function codes must match the specific Modbus device.
  • Example Modbus RTU sequence from the source: transmit bytes 01 05 00 00 FF 00 8C 3A (function code 05, register 0x0000, value 0xFF00, CRC 8C 3A).
  • Power consumption: 12 V, 0.056 A, approximately 0.67 W average.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

Senden (Modbus-Beispiel): 01 05 00 00 FF 00 8C 3A
Antwort (Modbus-Beispiel): 01 05 00 00 FF 00 8C 3A

Notes and version constraints

  • Default IP ambiguity: The source lists both 10.10.100.254 and 10.10.110.254 as defaults – please verify with the manufacturer.
  • Several places contain placeholder {{{5}}} instead of images; the associated steps are therefore only partially documented.
  • To restore factory settings, hold the Reload button for more than 5 seconds after power-on; exact behavior depends on firmware version.
  • If the configuration page cannot be opened: unplug the Ethernet cable or switch the port to LAN mode – the step depends on the firmware variant (N-/Z-Ver).
  • Security: Leaving the web-interface administrator password blank is possible, but setting account and password is recommended to avoid unauthorized access.
  • Automatic restart on network failure is configurable; exact parameters depend on the version.
  • The stated transmission distance (~50 m) applies only under ideal conditions (open area, 3 dBi antenna); real environments may perform significantly worse.
  • TCP/UDP troubleshooting includes checking firewall settings; temporarily disabling the firewall is for testing only.
