Summary

The 2.66-inch e-paper module for Raspberry Pi Pico provides a 296×152 pixel resolution in black/white via an SPI interface. It is suitable for low-power displays with long-term display without backlighting.

Technical overview

  • Size: 2.66 inch; active area: 60.088 mm × 30.704 mm; panel outline: 71.820 mm × 36.304 mm × 1.05 mm; driver board: 74.0 mm × 37.5 mm
  • Operating voltage: 3.3 V; communication: SPI (SPI0, CPHL=0, CPOL=0)
  • Resolution: 296 × 152 pixels; pixel pitch: 0.202 × 0.203 mm; grayscale levels: 2 (black = bit 0, white = bit 1)
  • Refresh times (measured): partial refresh ~0.3 s; full refresh ~6 s; refresh power typ. 42.4 mW; sleep current < 0.01 µA
  • Pico/Pico 2 pin mapping: VCC→VSYS, GND→GND, DIN→GP11 (MOSI), CLK→GP10 (SCK), CS→GP9 (active low), DC→GP8 (high = data, low = command), RST→GP12 (active low), BUSY→GP13
  • Command/data control via the DC pin: DC=0 writes a command, DC=1 writes data; CS is held low to enable the module
  • Pixel encoding: 1 byte = 8 pixels in MSB format; a monochrome image is transmitted as a bitstream
  • Demo code is fetched via wget or git from the Waveshare repository; the C project is built with CMake and Make, producing a .uf2 file flashed onto the Pico via BOOTSEL + USB
  • For MicroPython: the appropriate firmware (.uf2) is also loaded via BOOTSEL; Thonny IDE is used to run scripts directly on the Pico
  • The display reflects ambient light and requires no backlight; after power-off the last image remains visible

mkdir build && cd build && export PICO_SDK_PATH=../../pico-sdk && cmake -DPICO_BOARD=pico -DPICO_PLATFORM=rp2040 .. && make -j9
cp epd.uf2 /media/pi/RPI-RP2/
void EPD_2IN66_Init(UBYTE Mode); // Mode=0 full update, Mode=1 partial update
void EPD_2IN66_Clear(void);
void EPD_2IN66_Display(UBYTE *Image);

Notes and version constraints

  • Refresh time and power figures are test measurements; real-world values may vary by environment.
  • Full refresh causes visible flicker – noted as a normal phenomenon in the source.
  • After deep-sleep the e-paper must be re-initialized before it can be refreshed again.
  • When waking from sleep, clear the display first to minimize afterimages.
  • If the program hangs on “busy”: check wiring and verify SPI clock rate and mode are configured correctly.
  • The exact line to uncomment in main.c depends on the precise model; for this module the corresponding 2.66-inch definition must be enabled.
