Technical overview

  • Resolution: 800 × 480 pixels; screen diagonal: 7.5 inches
  • Display colors: black, white, red (tri-color mode)
  • Interface: SPI, operating voltage 3.3 V
  • Full refresh takes approximately 16 s; flickering during the global refresh is normal
  • Refresh power: 48 mW typical; standby current < 0.01 µA
  • Pico pinout: DIN→GP11, CLK→GP10, CS→GP9, DC→GP8, RST→GP12, BUSY→GP13, VCC→VSYS, GND→GND
  • Pixel data are stored as one byte per 8 pixels; in tri-color mode two bit-planes are required: a black/white plane and a red/white plane
  • Demo code can be downloaded via wget or git clone and compiled/run under C/C++, MicroPython or Arduino

Commands and examples – verify before use:

cd ~ && sudo wget https://files.waveshare.com/upload/5/5a/Pico_ePaper_Code.zip && unzip Pico_ePaper_Code.zip -d Pico_ePaper_Code && cd ~/Pico_ePaper_Code
cd ~ && git clone https://github.com/waveshare/Pico_ePaper_Code.git && cd ~/Pico_ePaper_Code
mkdir build && cd build && export PICO_SDK_PATH=../../pico-sdk && cmake -DPICO_BOARD=pico -DPICO_PLATFORM=rp2040 .. && make -j9
cp epd.uf2 /media/pi/RPI-RP2/
sudo apt upgrade thonny
git clone https://github.com/waveshare/Pico_ePaper_Code.git

Notes and version constraints

  • The stated 16 s refresh time is experimental test data; actual times may vary
  • When waking from deep sleep, the first refresh may show afterimages; clear the screen before refreshing
  • If the program gets stuck in the busy state: check wiring and verify SPI parameters (baud rate, mode)
  • After entering deep sleep, the module must be re-initialized before it can be refreshed again
  • The display border color can be adjusted via the Border Waveform Control register or the VCOM AND DATA INTERVAL SETTING register
  • Power consumption figures are lab measurements; real-world values may differ depending on driver board and usage conditions
