Technical overview

  • Sensor: Sony IMX477R, 12.3 MP (4056×3040), pixel size 1.55 µm, CMOS diagonal 7.9 mm
  • Output formats: RAW12/10/8 and COMP8; integrated IR filter
  • Lens mounts: C/CS thread (adapter ring included) and M12 mount; adjustable back focus
  • Connection via CSI connector between headphone jack and HDMI port on Pi 5; on Zero next to power connector
  • For two cameras simultaneously: append 'cam0' or 'cam1' to the corresponding dtoverlay lines
  • Update system packages before testing: sudo apt-get update -y && sudo apt-get upgrade -y
  • Set camera_auto_detect=0 in /boot/firmware/config.txt (Bookworm) and add the matching dtoverlay line
  • Test the preview window with rpicam-hello or libcamera-hello; close with Alt+F4 or Ctrl+C

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo apt-get update -y
sudo apt-get upgrade -y
sudo nano /boot/firmware/config.txt
dtoverlay=imx477
dtoverlay=imx219,cam0
dtoverlay=ov5647,cam1
sudo libcamera-hello -t 0
sudo libcamera-hello -t 0 --camera 0
sudo libcamera-hello -t 0 --camera 1
rpicam-hello
sudo raspi-config
sudo cat /etc/os-release

Notes and version constraints

  • Exact compatibility of third-party cameras depends on the specific model and driver version – verify before deployment
  • When using IMX290 on a Raspberry Pi 5, an additional JSON file must be placed in the libcamera/IPA directory
  • Older boards (Pi 3 and earlier) running Bullseye may need Glamor enabled for correct preview behavior
  • White balance can vary by environment; OpenCV parameter tuning is provided for reference only
  • Lens physical dimensions and focal lengths are manufacturer-specific – verify fit with your own housing before purchase
