Summary

The SIM7020E NB-IoT HAT is a Raspberry Pi module based on the SIM7020E chipset. It enables NB-IoT data communication via serial AT commands and supports protocols such as MQTT, HTTP(S), TCP/UDP, and LWM2M/CoAP.

Technical overview

  • Compatible with Raspberry Pi 2B, 3B, Zero and Zero W via the 40-pin GPIO connector.
  • Supported bands: FDD-LTE B1/B3/B5/B8/B20/B28.
  • Data rates: uplink up to 62.5 kbit/s, downlink up to 26.15 kbit/s.
  • Powered by 5 V; logic level defaults to 3.3 V and can be switched to 5 V via jumper.
  • Two status LEDs indicate network registration and data transmission.
  • Serial interface with configurable baud rate from 300 to 921600 bps (default 115200 bps).
  • Controlled through AT commands following V.25TER, 3GPP TS 27.007, and SIMCOM AT commands.
  • The USB port is for power supply or debugging only, not for sending AT commands.

Notes and version constraints

  • The supported frequency bands must match the SIM card provider; otherwise network registration will fail.
  • The USB port cannot be used for AT command control – it is limited to power supply or debugging.
  • HTTP and MQTT responses may be delayed due to low NB-IoT data rates.
  • When using with Raspberry Pi, the hardware serial port must be enabled and the serial login shell disabled.
  • Compiling the BCM2835 library may produce Makefile errors; fix by running autoreconf -vfi, then recompile and install.
  • Sleep mode is entered by holding PWRKEY for 3–5 s or sending AT+CPOWD=1; wake by pulling the DTR pin high for 3–5 seconds.
  • Only NB-IoT-capable SIM cards are suitable; standard SIM cards may not work.
