Summary

The Motor Driver HAT adds an I2C-controlled drive stage to a Raspberry Pi. It includes a PCA9685 (12-bit PWM) and a TB6612FNG dual H-bridge, an MP1854 5V regulator, and a VIN input stage for 6–12 V. Five address jumpers allow stacking up to 32 modules.

Technical overview

  • Based on the Raspberry Pi form factor; fits Zero/Zero W/Zero WH/2B/3B/3B+.
  • I2C control with five address jumpers (A0–A4); default address 0x40, configurable in range 0x40–0x5F; up to 32 modules can be stacked.
  • PCA9685 provides 16 channels at 12-bit resolution; PWM frequency range 40 Hz to 1000 Hz.
  • TB6612FNG: dual H-bridge driver for two DC motors (A/B).
  • Power input via VIN_USER: recommended 6–12 V; the MP1854 theoretically accepts 4.5–28 V, but the motor supply logic limits the operating range to 6–12 V.
  • MP1854 produces stable 5 V for the Raspberry Pi; RT9193-33 supplies 3.3 V for logic and PWM signals.
  • Pinout: 5V, 3V3, GND, SDA, SCL, VIN, A1/A2, B1/B2.
  • For Raspberry Pi, enable I2C via raspi-config; restart required afterwards.
  • Bullseye users must replace “apt-get” with “apt”; only Python 3 is supported.
  • Sample code is provided as a 7z archive; after unpacking into the target directory, run the demo (make + ./main or python3 main.py).

Notes and version constraints

  • The source is unverified supplier material; all statements should be verified against original datasheets before use.
  • Exact regulator current draw and maximum continuous load per motor are not specified – verify before sizing.
  • Address configuration via jumpers requires soldering/resistor changes; watch for collisions when stacking.
  • The sample archive comes from files.waveshare.com; integrity and version should be checked before execution.
  • On Bullseye, replace “apt-get” with “apt”; older systems may have different package names.
  • The stated voltage and frequency ranges apply only under the described conditions; deviations require manual confirmation.
