Summary

Industrial IoT baseboard for the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (not included). It provides PoE Ethernet, an M.2 connector for 4G/5G modules, isolated industrial interfaces (CAN, RS485, RS232, ADC, GPIO/I2C), plus HDMI, USB and RTC.

Technical overview

  • The board is a baseboard for all variants of the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4; the CM4 itself is not included.
  • Power input range: 7–36 V; for normal CM4 operation, 12 V / 2 A or higher supply is recommended.
  • PoE via the RJ45 Gigabit port following 802.3af; to enable it, set the PoE jumper to EN.
  • The M.2 B KEY supports 4G modules (e.g., SIM7600); 5G module support is limited, and the M.2 interface is exclusively for module connection and does not support SSDs.
  • Isolated interfaces: CAN, RS485, RS232, differential ADC, GPIO and I2C – suitable for industrial fieldbuses and sensors.
  • Two HDMI outputs each support up to 4K @ 30 fps; two MIPI DSI and CSI ports are present but cannot be used simultaneously by default.
  • USB2.0 is disabled by default; enable via config.txt: dtoverlay=dwc2, dr_mode=host.
  • An active buzzer is on GPIO22 (BCM); two user LEDs are on GPIO20 (green) and GPIO21 (red), both low-active.
  • RTC is powered via a CR1220 holder; a cooling-fan connector with speed control is integrated.
  • Operating temperature range per manufacturer: −25 °C to 80 °C.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo wget https://files.waveshare.com/upload/b/ba/Compute_Module_4_PoE_4G_Board_Code.zip
unzip -o Compute_Module_4_PoE_4G_Board_Code.zip -d ./Compute_Module_4_PoE_4G_Board_Code
sudo raspi-config   # Interfacing Options -> I2C -> Yes
sudo reboot
dtoverlay=dwc2,dr_mode=host   # in /boot/config.txt [cm4] section
sudo raspivid -t 0 -cs 0   # first camera
sudo raspivid -t 0 -cs 1   # second camera

Notes and version constraints

  • All instructions were tested on Raspberry Pi OS; other operating systems are not supported.
  • When flashing the image via USB-C, do not connect any other devices; the port is only for flashing, not for power supply.
  • Check fan voltage before connecting (5 V or 12 V); default is 12 V, switch via the FAN_VCC jumper.
  • When using 5G modules, some functions are limited; refer to the SIM8200EA-M2_5G HAT wiki for setup details.
  • Multiple hardware versions of this board exist due to chip shortages; contact after-sales service if unsure which version you have.
  • The two DISP interfaces cannot be used together by default.
  • The error 'config failed, hub doesn't have any ports' appears with newer Raspberry Pi OS; fix by removing otg_mode=1 and adding dtoverlay=dwc2, dr_mode=host.
