Summary
The module provides a red, 0.4-inch, 4-digit 8-segment display with SPI-compatible driving via a 74HC595 shift register. It plugs directly onto the standard pin header of the Pico and requires a 5 V supply.

Technical overview
- Supply voltage: 5 V; operating current approx. 30 mA.
- Display: 4 digits, red LEDs, negative circuit type, display part FJ4401AH.
- Dimensions: 21(H) x 52.00(V) mm.
- Wiring to the Pico: VCC to VSYS, GND to GND, DIN to GP11, CLK to GP10, RCLK to GP9.
- The 74HC595 driver is an 8-bit shift register with parallel output latch; it needs separate clocks for shifting and latching.
- For C development: build the project in the c/ folder (cmake + make), generate main.uf2 and copy it to the RPI-RP2 drive in BOOTSEL mode.
- For MicroPython: use the Thonny IDE, flash firmware rp2-pico-20210418-v1.15.uf2, then run the sample file from the python/ folder.
- DEV_Config.c provides GPIO and SPI helpers: DEV_Digital_Write/Read and DEV_SPI_WriteByte.
Commands and examples – verify before use:
sudo apt-get install p7zip-full
cd ~
sudo wget https://files.waveshare.com/upload/9/94/Pico-8SEG-LED-Code.7z
7z x Pico-8SEG-LED-Code.7z -o./Pico-8SEG-LED-Code
cd ~/Pico-8SEG-LED-Code/c/build/
export PICO_SDK_PATH=../../pico-sdk
cmake ..
make -j9
sudo apt upgrade thonny
Notes and version constraints
- The exact pin assignments (GP9/GP10/GP11) are version-dependent on the Pico driver used and must be verified before soldering or wiring.
- Firmware files such as rp2-pico-20210418-v1.15.uf2 or pico_micropython_20210121.uf2 must be available; flashing certain MicroPython firmwares on Pico2 can cause recognition issues.
- Using Thonny requires an up-to-date version, since older versions lack Pico support.
- On the first-time Arduino upload, the correct COM port must be selected; choosing the wrong port leads to errors.
- The source contains outdated links and path names; all paths and URLs should be validated for validity before use.
